Northumbria Police has deployed independent domestic violence advisers alongside frontline officers as part of a national campaign to tackle domestic abuse during Euro 2024.

12 advisers have been deployed across the force area and have been working since the football tournament kicked off, arriving at domestic abuse call outs to provide advice, address safeguarding concerns, and support victims.

The scheme is part of the national Operation Flagship, which aims to protect vulnerable victims and target perpetrators for the duration of the Euros.

Chloe, one of the independent domestic violence advisers that is part of the Northumbria Police operation, said: “When we are able to speak with people in person, we can gauge emotions better, read body language, and build that rapport so we can tailor our approach appropriately.

“We want to be as approachable as possible so we do not wear uniforms and we are here to speak as openly as possible about what help we can offer you, completely independent from the police.

“Going out with officers means we can catch people in the moment of what has just happened and talk about what we can offer, carrying that support on immediately without the need to wait for any referrals.

“I feel really privileged to be part of this experience and be able to get to the front-line in offering those immediate acts of support, safety advice, and signposting to whatever service is most appropriate for them.”

Domestic abuse lead for Northumbria Police, DCI Nicola Seymour, said: “Chloe’s work is vitally important in offering much-needed support to anyone who has experienced any form of domestic abuse.

“To anyone who is in two minds about reporting domestic abuse, please know we are here for you and we are ready to give you the support you need. Report to us today.”

Victims of abuse can contact Northumbria Police using the ‘report’ page of its website or by calling 101.
